It is extremely important that stockmen know what the value of that hay is to their livestock.
Low quality forage can be offset with adequate amounts of protein supplements, but at what cost and how much additional protein is needed. The only sure fire method for knowing the quality of your hay and the nutritional requirements for supplementing cattle is through testing of that hay.
Which is why the Waller County Livestock and Forage Committee is happy to announce that the Annual Waller County Hay Show is back and is fast approaching. A copy of the hay show rules and instructions can be found on the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Waller County Office website at waller.agrilife.org under the Hay Show tab. This year’s hay show will take place on Friday, September 27, 2019 at the Waller County Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Fall Forage Program during the Waller County Fair.
The Livestock and Forage Committee encourages every cattle producer to submit a hay sample for analysis. Make sure that if you submit more than one sample for testing that you write somewhere on the entry tag (other than the space marked entry number) a code such as cutting number, field name or something else that will help you correlate your samples to the results when they come back. We recommend that you submit representative samples from each field, each time it is cut. Hay samples may be dropped off at the Waller County Extension Office in Hempstead; samples will cost $15 for the first sample which includes your meal and registration to the Fall Forage Program and $5 for every sample after that. Additional meal/program tickets may also be purchased before the event. Once the hay is submitted, a sample will be taken to the Texas A&M Forage Testing Lab for analysis. The analysis will detail the nutritional value of the hay that you will be feeding. The results of the analysis will be handed out during the Fall Forage Program. The deadline for submitting your sample is September 13th at noon. We can’t have a show without your support.
The Fall Forage Program and Waller County Hay Show, is sponsored by the Waller County Livestock and Forage Committee. It will take place on Friday, September 27th, at the Waller County Fairgrounds in Edmonds Hall in Hempstead with registration starting at 1:30pm.
Judging of the hay samples will take place prior to the program, with the winners of the show being named at the conclusion of the program. This year’s Waller County Hay Show will offer awards to the top placing entries in each category.
